Science Olympiad - RSO and SPSO

1) Introduction:

The World Science Contest (WSC) is a prestigious annual national online Science contest which has been organised by The World Contests (TWC). This contest is opened to students from Primary 4 to Secondary 3 (Grade 4 to Grade 9). It comprises of the Theory round only.

2) The Objectives of the World Science Contest (WSC):

  • Excite and engage students in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and Physics beyond their formal curriculum.
  •  Provide a platform for identifying budding talents in Science.
  • Cultivate enthusiasm and instil a great passion for Science.
  • Provide an avenue to showcase students’ abilities in the Science subjects.

3) World Science Contest (WSC 2024):

The online World Science Contest 2024 will be held internationally online on 14th April 2024 (Sunday 9am, Singapore time) or in schools from 1st April 2024 to 30th April 2024. The organiser reserves the right to amend the rules and regulations of the competition.

4) Format of the Contest:

There are 42 MCQ Questions. Each question has 5 possible answers or multiple correct responses of which only one is correct. The total marks for the contest is 100 marks, which are allotted as follows:

Questions 1 to 26:          2 marks each

Questions 27 to 42:        3 marks each

There will be no deduction of marks for error or omissions. Marks will be awarded for correct answers only. The duration of the contest is 1 hour 30 minutes.

The scope of the contest includes Primary and Lower Secondary Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics.

5) Instructions for Contestants:

i) All contestants must have their own tablets / laptops / desktops with internet connections (via School Wi-Fi or home Wi-Fi) with suitable browser to access the contest website. Google Meet or Voov Meeting app must be installed onto the private contestants’ devices.

ii) Another handphone or laptop with built – in camera is required for invigilating the private contestant. Google Meet or Voov Meeting app must also be installed onto this device.

iii) Login details (Contestant ID and Password) will be emailed to the school administrators or Parents. School Administrators may print out the individual PDFs for the respective contestants containing the login details from the portal. Private contestants will also receive a Google Meet or Voov Meeting link for the purpose of invigilation and security.

iv) Read the instruction carefully on the screen before you start.

v) There will be a timer on the screen for the individual contestant to show the time remaining for the contest.

vi) After the contest, please log out of the website.

vii) The use of calculators, mathematical sets or mathematical tables is not allowed during the contest.

6) Awards and Prizes:

a) Individual winners will qualify for the following awards:

ai) Gold Award will be awarded to the top 1.5% contestants or the top 50 contestants whichever is lower with exceptional outstanding performance that meets the minimum requirements set by the judges.

aii) Silver Award will be awarded to the next 2.5% or the next 70 contestants of the field whichever is lower.

aiii) Bronze Award will be awarded to the next 6% of the field whichever is lower.

aiv) Others will receive an e – certificate of participation.

b) 10 Individual Prizes will be awarded to the TOP 10 contestants:

The details of the prizes are as follows:

  • 1st Prize:                    $100 cash
 
  • 2nd Prize:                    $60 cash
 
  • 3rd Prize:                     $40 cash
 
  • 4th – 6th Prize:          $30 cash
 
  • 7th – 10th Prize:        $20 cash

7) Announcement of Winners

a) Results of the World Science Contest 2024 will be released by 1st May 2024. No telephone enquiry regarding results will be entertained.

b) After the release of the results, students will be to view their complete set of competition questions and learn from the detailed work solutions and explanation for all the questions on the student dashboard. 

c) An individual detailed academic report will be available for viewing on the student dashboard after the release of the results.

8) Registration of the Contest:

Registration of the contest is either via school or private candidate. The registration fee per student is $68 and registration opens from 1st January 2024 to 31st March 2024. Strictly no submissions will be allowed after 31st March 2024. Registration will be done strictly via online. There will strictly be no refund of the registration fee.

i) Registration via Schools:

ia) Schools are allowed to host World Science Contest 2024 either in school or online and the students can take the competition from home. Fairness and security of our contest is very important for all contestants. Hence, we have developed a set of procedures to ensure that all our competitions are monitored and invigilated in the most secure setup. A minimum of 10 students are needed to register for the competition via school.

The school can choose to host the World Science Contest 2024 from 1st April 2024 to 30th April 2024.

aii) How to register via School

  • School will send out the invitation letters for parents to register via school.
 
  • The parents will pay the school via cash.
 
  • Teacher-in-charge will fill up the students’ particulars online by clicking here.
 
  • Teacher-in-charge can view, edit, add or delete the school participants online.
 
  • Payment must be made before 31st March 2024 based on the number of participants.
 

b) Registration as Private Candidate:

Private candidate can register for the competition from our website from 1st January 2024 to 31st March 2024. The online World Science Contest 2024 will be held internationally online on 14th April 2024 (Sunday 9am, Singapore time). Private candidate must ensure that they have the Contestant ID and Password emailed to his / her Parent’s account 30 minutes after registration.

 9) Closing Date:

 All registrations will be closed on 31st March 2024. No submission or amendment will be allowed after this date.

10) Certificates:

  • Schools / Parents are responsible in ensuring that the names of participants are correct as the names will appear on the certificates. 
 
  • A surcharge of $68 SGD nett will be imposed for the reprint of each certificate.
 
  • Schools / Parents will collect all the certificates and trophies, if any.
